What is Bakuchiol? A natural alternative to Retinol? Really?
You might have noticed an ingredient in our facial oil called “Bakuchiol” and wondered what the heck it is. Bakuchiol is fairly new to the skin care industry and has been shown to be a potentially natural alternative to retinol. It has been found to have similar benefits to retinol in managing the effects of aging, wrinkles and hyperpigmentation without the potential side effects of retinol (redness, irritation, scaling). For those of you with sensitive skin, this may be what you have been looking for in upping your game on your skin care regime.
What is Bakuchiol and where does it come from? Bakuchiol is derived from the seeds of Psoralea corylifolia, also known as the babchi plant. This plant is found predominantly in China, India and South Africa.
But not all products tauting the benefits of Bakuchiol are created equal. There is a difference between “babchi oil” and “Bakuchiol”, so look at the ingredients carefully before buying. Babchi oil uses a different extraction method than Bakuchiol to bring out the benefits of the babchi seeds. That extraction method may leave behind potentiallybyproducts that you don’t want on your skin.
Our facial oil contains Bakuchiol formulated by Sytheon corporation, which is a very highly regarded producer of Bakuchiol.
The science behind Bakuchiol is quite complex, so we have included some links to additional information if you would like to know more.
